Nelson Mandela is arguably one of the most famous political prisoners of all time. Mandela became a powerful symbol of resistance to the South African anti-apartheid movement during his imprisonment from 1964 to 1990. Upon release he went on to become South Africa's first democratically elected leader (1994-1999). Mandela launched a worldwide campaign in 2003 to raise awareness of the devastating impact of AIDS. The effort was named "46664" after Mandela's prison number. On November 29, 2003 a special concert event in Cape Town, South Africa was attended by over 40,000 people. Performances from the show were brought together on three CDs released in 2004. All the proceeds raised from the sales of the CD go towards the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to help improve the lives of those infected and affected by the HIV/AIDS in Africa.
